Getting Around

Transit information

It is useful to have a map of the area you live in and a map of bus routes. This map can be found at the beginning of the Yellow Pages phone book. For many other maps and bus route information, you can go to convenience stores, libraries or gas stations. We have given an outline of bus prices in the next few pages. Each year, the price usually increases slightly. When taking the bus, you can pay each time, or you can buy weekly or monthly bus passes, which save you a bit of money. If you are a student or senior, the rates are lower but you must have proper documentation. The following site has information on the Winnipeg transit system: http://myride.winnipegtransit.com/en

There is also a great site called Navigo where you can type in your starting point and end point to find detailed information about when to leave your starting point, where to catch the bus, where to transfer and how to get there, and the time you will reach the end point. The maps and times are estimates but are a great resource to use. The website is www.winnipegtransit.com/NavigoPlus/TripPlanner.jsp

You can also use the tele-bus system by phone to find out what time a bus will be leaving your transit stop. To use it:

  • Locate the street name in the Transit Guide section of the Winnipeg Telephone Directory or check the tele-bus five-digit number at your bus stop.
  • Dial the tele-bus number 287-7433 - this is the same number for all Transit stops.
  • When the recorded voice answers, enter the five-digit stop number.
  • Press one for the arrival times of the next three buses at that stop. You may also have to enter the bus route number.
Transit costs - Winnipeg transit bus service 2009:

Children under age 5 are free when travelling with an adult. Youth ages 6-16 or students with photo ID or "GO Card" have reduced fares. Seniors must have a federal government Blue Card or a transit photo ID.

The Manitoba Enhanced Identification Card

A new alternative to Manitoba photo-identification is the Manitoba Enhanced Identification Card (EIC). Manitoba EIC is a new, optional document which denotes your identity and citizenship which can also be used for crossing the U.S. boarder by land or water.* Manitoba's new EIC is one of the first in Canada to gain the full approval of U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection.

The Manitoba EIC is:

  • more affordable than a passport;
  • convenient—it fits in your wallet, so you never leave without it; and
  • made with advanced technology-based security features.

You can book your appointment to apply at any Autopac agent or Manitoba Public Insurance Service Centre. For more information about the EIC go to the Manitoba Public Insurance website at www.mpi.mb.ca.

Cost (first time) $30 for drivers
